Lord I grew up in a home of alcohol and drugs. I’m now saved but still have the desire at times to fall back. What can I do to escape this grip on my life?

  1. Introduction
    1. As people living in a fallen world, we all can face temptations and addictions. Whether your weakness is alcohol, drugs, smoking, overeating or any number of things, God’s Word has the tools you need to finally break free, and go from victory to victory, and from glory to glory as you press in to God’s Word and His Spirit.

  1. Why Do I Still Struggle with This?
    1. Temptation is something we all will face as long as we are in this world. Even the Apostle Paul said this in Romans 7:18-19: For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.
    2. The bible tells us that we still battle the old man, or the old nature. Romans 6:5-8: For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin. Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:
    3. The devil is the one that sends temptations our way. He knows our weaknesses and will use them to try to trip us up. 1 Peter 5:8: Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

  1. I thought I got Set Free from addictions when I was Saved?
    1. When you were saved, you were set free from sin, given eternal life, and you are in the process of becoming more like Christ. 2 Corinthians 5:17: Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
    2. As you live for Christ, you are transformed to become more like Him. All sinful desires and temptations are not instantly gone. We have to decide every day to walk close to God, and over time, those old desires pass away. Titus 2:11-12: For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;

  1. So to be honest, I did fall back recently. What Do I do now?
    1. Confess your sins to Jesus, and receive His Forgiveness. 1 John 1:9: If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
    2. Don’t dwell on the slip-up, but reach forth to the great things God has for you. Philippians 3:13: Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,
    3. Press on to the calling of God on your life. God has a ministry, a purpose He wants you to walk in. Press on to it as it says in Philippians 3:14: press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

  1. How can I escape this grip on my life?
    1. Spend time in the Word. Romans 12:2: And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
    2. Along with the Word, listen to worship music, and sing praises to God. God inhabits our praises and victory is won as we worship Him. Psalm 22:3: But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel. Also, Psalm 100:4 says Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.
    3. Be in church and let people pray with you. Galatians 6:2: Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
    4. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you every day and empower you to be victorious. Ephesians 5:18: And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
    5. John 14:26: But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

  1. What are some scriptures I can use?
    1. 1 Corinthians 10:13: There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
    2. 1 John 2:16-17: or all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
    3. 1 Corinthians 6″12All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.
    4. James 4:7:Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
    5. 1 Peter 5:10-11: But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you. To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
