Encouragement – Pastor Wayne

  1. Definition of Encouragement

    1. Encouragement is the action of giving someone support, confidence, or hope

  1. Who did God encourage in the bible (5)

    1. Joshua in Joshua 1:6: Joshua in Joshua 1:5 and 6 – There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee. Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them.

Isaac in Genesis 26:24: nd the Lord appeared unto him the same night, and said, I am the God of Abraham thy father: fear not, for I am with thee, and will bless thee, and multiply thy seed for my servant Abraham’s sake.

    2. The nation of Israel in Isaiah 41:10: Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.

  1. Why do we need encouragement?

    1. We need to be encouraged so we are not hardened by sin’s deceitfulness – Hebrews 3:13 – But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.

    2. Encouragement helps us overcome trials, and the attacks of the enemy John 16:33b – In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

    3. Ephesians 6:12 – For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

    4. Encouragement helps us to love people as Jesus did John 13:34-35 – A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. 35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

  2. How did Jesus encourage the disciples?

    1. He encouraged them and us to come to him: Matthew 11:28-30 – Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

    2. He encouraged and tought them to pray, using the pattern found in Matthew 6:9-13 – After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

    3. He encouraged Peter to step out in faith: Matthew 14:29 And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.

 How to encourage others?

  1. We can encourage others in our conversation: Ephesians 4:29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

  2. We can encourage others by spending time with them: Hebrews 10:24-25 – 24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

  3. We can encourage others by reminding them of Jesus’ soon return: 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18 – 6 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

  1. How to encourage yourself?

    1. Encourage yourself by singing songs of praise to the Lord: Put Christian music on or sing to the Lord yourself. You’ll find as you do this, that you will be encouraged and your faith and trust in Him will increase

    2. Remember your victories, times when God has helped you etc. There are many instances of God reminding His People of what He had done for them before as a way of encouragement.

    3. See things from God’s viewpoint. Until you get God’s perspective on your life, you will always be overwhelmed with the impossibilities. Get rejuvenated with a fresh outlook from the throne of the Almighty.

    4. Rekindle your passion for a closer walk with God: A relationship with Jesus and the Holy Spirit will bring a renewed sense of significance to your life. He loves you. He is for you, not against you. When He is for you, no one else can be against you. You are God’s very own possession, bought and paid for with the sacrifice of His
